Team Introduction
Since Coach Zico assumed leadership last October, the East Asian Football Championship is the first international competition for the Japan National Team. Coach Zico has stated from the very beginning that, "Test matches are great opportunities to strengthen the team, but we will,of course, seek the championship title in any international competition." As the host nation, Japan cannot fail to capture the title.
The Japan National Team has had numerous international experiences of late. Many young as well as veteran players are on board. Coach Zico plans to draw on and maximize the individual characteristics, so it is always interesting to see who he will choose and what strategy he will employ.
After this competition, there is the FIFA Confederations Cup France 2003, a tournament in which Japan finished as runner-up previously, and the 2004 Asian Cup, of which Japan is the defending champion. In order to be victorious in these competitions, the final competition of the East Asian Football Championship is an important event. |

Message from Head Coach
All teams participating in the East Asian Football Championship 2003 Final Competition are leading football powers of Asia. All of the contending teams, Japan alike, are aiming to contest in the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ in Germany. To compete with such rival teams in this event provides the Japan National Team with an excellent opportunity to experience their rivals strength first hand and will most certainly be a valuable experience for the Japan National Team. |
