Rio de Janeiro: With just over a week until the start of the Rio Olympic Games football tournaments, the players who will represent Asia’s contenders have been revealed.
The Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) five hopefuls – Japan, Korea Republic and Iraq in the men’s tournament, and Australia and China in the women’s draw – unveiled their 18-player squads as Asia chases its first gold medal in Olympic football competition.
2012 bronze medallist Korea Republic will bring star power to Brazil, with Tottenham’s AFC Asian International Player of the Year Song Heung-min and Porto’s Suk Hyun-jun added to the squad that finished second at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship.
Makoto Teguramori’s Japan squad has a strong focus on domestic talent, with just three of the 18 players selected plying their trade outside of Japan, including new Arsenal signing Takuma Asano, while Iraq’s squad features nine of the players who reached the semi-finals at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.....
