In continued support of the local community’s fight against the COVID-19 virus, Guam Football Association donated isolation gowns and two Demistifier™ sets – isolation and source control systems – to Guam Memorial Hospital.
GFA purchased 300 isolation gowns from Pacific Laundry & Textile Rental Service to donate to the hospital and utilized $15,000 in prize money from garnering the 2019 Asian Football Confederation Social Responsibility Aspiring Member Association of the Year to purchase the Demistifier™ sets, a total value of close to $19,000. The gowns were delivered Apr. 21 and the purchase of the Demistifier™ sets was finalized May 7.
“We have been in communication with GMH and discussed assisting in the purchase of needed items by medical professionals,” said Tino San Gil, GFA President. “We contacted AFC for approval to disburse funds from the award for the purchase of the items for GMH as part of GFA’s social responsibility initiatives.
“We are all in this collective fight against the COVID-19 virus and want to continue helping the community, local business partners, and our members and staff as much as we can. We look forward to improvements in the current situation so that we can resume a sense of normalcy, and particularly all football leagues and activities in Guam,” San Gil added.
In addition to donations to GMH, GFA also continues to assist local business partners through the pandemic. As part of its partnership with Triple J Auto Group, GFA has offered the National Training Center’s parking lot for Hertz Car Rental’s fleet of vehicles while the Harmon facility remains closed for football activities.
GFA suspended all of its football leagues and activities beginning March 16, following the government’s social distancing and stay-at-home mandates, and will work to resume them once mandates are lifted. GFA is working with FIFA and AFC on ways to properly resume leagues, as well as preparations for international competition.
In 2019, GFA was recognized as the AFC Social Responsibility Aspiring Member Association of the Year on Oct. 30 in an awards ceremony at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur. AFC recognized GFA’s social responsibility efforts in 2019 and awarded GFA with a trophy and $15,000 from the AFC Dream Asia Foundation to continue social responsibility projects in 2020. A little over a month later, GFA garnered the highest continental honor in football for aspiring Asian nations – the AFC Member Association of the Year – at the AFC Annual Awards 2019 ceremony in Hong Kong.

The gowns were part of a second donation to GMH that also included providing needed funds for the purchase of two Demistifier™ sets for the hospital. In March, GFA donated its supply of N95 masks and hand sanitizer gel to GMH. The gowns and Demistifier™ sets are valued at $19,000, with the majority of funds from GFA's prize money earned from winning Asian Football Confederation's 2019 Social Responsibility Aspiring Member Association of the Year.
