Navi Mumbai: China PR’s 2-1 defeat of Mexico in the opening round of games in Group C of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 owed much to a decision made by their goalkeeper, Chen Liu, three years ago.
The 16-year-old, who thwarted the Mexicans time and again with the score at 0-0, was a keen ice skater until the age of 13, when she decided to give it up for football.
“I started training as a goalkeeper when I was 12,” the China PR custodian told FIFA+ in the mixed zone after her side’s win. “That was when I started to play football. But then I gave it up to do ice skating. Football is my life, though, my love, and after a year I went back to it.” .....
